Location: Tewkesbury, Gloucester
Client: Private I Extension & Refurbishment
Surtees, an existing 60’s bungalow has breathtaking views over the Malvern Hills an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The property captured the imagination of our clients, whom desired to extend the sixties bungalow to maximises its connection to the open landscape. The couple are nearing retirement so their brief was to transform Surtees into a ‘grown up house’, although being maintained as a home primarily for themselves, they needed to accommodate two grown up children and partners whenever they are called upon.
The plan reflects the diversity of the couple’s family life and entertaining of friends, thus the new rear extension accommodates a large open planned living space for flexibility of these fluctuating social functions but at night the couple then retire to the cosy sitting room. The plan is orientated to afford views towards the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the rear for which our clients bought the property.
To ensure the proposal sits sympathetically with the neighbouring and adjacent bungalows, the same red brick and concrete tiling for the roof is used in keeping with the appearance of the neighbouring bungalows. The scale and form has been derived to create as minimal impact on the adjoining neighbours whilst gaining the area our clients required for their family. To the rear the clients requested a cathedral like living space with high ceilings and natural daylight. The proposal achieved this through a low and long sloping roof accommodating a double height space as you walk into the living room and a bedroom with a sloped roof for the clients telescope.
